Peter Waldo was born in 1140, and was a rich merchant from
Lyons. He later dedicated his life and fortune to spreading the gospel outside the official confines of the church. He sponsored the first bible translation into the vernacular since Jerome’s translation into Latin around 400 AD. This was quite unsettling to the church, as the bible had been kept out of the people’s native tongue. So much so that church sought to stamp out the Waldenses.
