Husbands & Wives

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.” Ephesians 5:25-27

One of the most important aspects of marriage is sanctifying your spouse.

“In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior.” 1 Peter 3:1-2

Husbands are to cleanse their wives. But what if the wife is disrespectful or resentful? This is practice for the kingdom! The whole point of the church is to act as parents in bringing the rest of mankind back to a state of righteousness. And guess who we’re responsible for? Those we’re closest to. The most extreme case would be a spouse who qualifies for heaven, and their spouse who ultimately dies second death. How do you steer an obstinate wife? Clearly there has to be corrections much as you would guide an errant child. When there is a qualm, it must be spoken about. If he or she will not listen, you bring it up in the presence of another Christian. Notice that the 1 Peter passage is the same for wives with a problematic husband. Notice, however, that she is not to tell him what to do! She is merely to walk the talk. In this way she maintains respect.
