October 31st, 1517 is given as the date Martin Luther posted his 95 theses to the doors of Castle Church in Wittenburg, Saxony, starting the Protestant Reformation.  Eric Metaxas’ biography shows that he probably posted them several days later amongst many other things posted on that public bulletin board.  The Metaxas biography is very much worth reading and shows many currents and political issues surrounding the Reformation.
