Jesus’ two geneologies

If you compare the genealogies of Matthew and Luke, some interesting questions arise.  How is it that Shealtiel could be the son of Jeconiah and also the son of Neri?  It seems that most agree that Matthew’s list is Joseph’s side and Luke’s list is Mary’s.  It follows that Shealtiel must be the biological son of Neri in order for Jesus to be a blood decendant of David.  The Jews had more meanings for son than we do, including son-in-laws or general descendants.  It’s possible that Jeconiah was Shealtiel’s uncle.

It’s notable that king David shows up in both lines as does Zerubbabel.  Messianic prophecies have a lot of Davidic overtones.  “In that day

“I will restore David’s fallen shelter—
I will repair its broken walls
    and restore its ruins—
and will rebuild it as it used to be.”  Amos 9:11

“Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”  Isaiah 9:7

“In love a throne will be established; in faithfulness a man will sit on it— one from the house of David— one who in judging seeks justice and speeds the cause of righteousness.”  Isaiah 16:5

“I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.”  Isaiah 22:22

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.”  Jeremiah 23:5

“Instead, they will serve the Lord their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.”  Jeremiah 30:9

““‘In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land.”  Jeremiah 33:15

“I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.”  Jeremiah 33:22

“I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd.”  Ezekiel 34:23

“I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the Lord have spoken.”  Ezekiel 34:24

“My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.”  Ezekiel 37:24

“They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived. They and their children and their children’s children will live there forever, and David my servant will be their prince forever.”  Ezekiel 37:25

“Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.”  Hosea 3:5

“On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity,”  Zechariah 13:1

Wow!  If that’s not enough prophecies!  But also note what’s said about Zerubbabel:

“I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.

“‘On that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”  Haggai 2:22-23

“Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke me up, like someone awakened from sleep.  He asked me, “What do you see?”  I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven channels to the lamps.  Also there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”  I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”  He answered, “Do you not know what these are?”  “No, my lord,” I replied.  So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.  “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”  Then the word of the Lord came to me: “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.  “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?”  Then I asked the angel, “What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand?”  Again I asked him, “What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil?”  He replied, “Do you not know what these are?”  “No, my lord,” I said.  So he said, “These are the two who are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.”  Zechariah 4:1-14

Zerubbabel will be intimately involved with the revealing of the Messiah and his temple as well.
