The Faithful Slave & The End

“And this Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.”  Matthew 24:14

Many are hurrying to complete the great commission in our day.  But who will preach to the dead?  Even if everyone could be reached in this day 2015, the end could not come because of the dead.

“And when you see the sign of uncleanness and desolation, that was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, which will stand in the Set Apart Place.  He that reads, let him understand.  Then those who are in Yehuda, let him flee to the mountain.  And he who is in the field, let him not turn back to take back his clothes.  And woe to the pregnant and to those who are nursing in those days.  And pray that your flight will not be in winter, nor on the Shabbat.  For then will be great suffering such as has not been from the beginning of the world until the present, nor will ever be again.  And if those days were not shortened, not any flesh would live, but because of the chosen, those days will be shortened.  If anyone should say to you then, behold the Messiah is here or there, do not believe it.  For false Messiahs and lying prophets will arise and they will produce signs and great wonders in order to deceive if possible even the chosen.  Behold, I have told you beforehand.  Therefore, if they say to you, ‘Behold, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out.  Or, ‘Behold, he is in the inner chamber,’ do not believe it.”  Matthew 24:15-26 AENT

“The people of a prince yet to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary, but his end will come with a flood, and desolations are decreed until the war is over.  He will make a strong covenant with leaders for one week [of years].  For half of the week he will put a stop to the sacrifice and the grain offering.  On the wing of detestable things the desolator will come and continue until the already decreed destruction is poured out on the desolator.”  Daniel 9:26-27 CJB

This desolation was partially fulfilled in 70AD when Titus marched on Jerusalem and desecrated and destroyed the temple.  But notice the prophecy says that it would happen worse than ever before in history or no one would survive.  Obviously, 70-73AD does not fit that criteria, so there must be a future fulfillment.  Also notice that this hints that a temple will be in operation at that time.  Hence this end cannot come in the next ten years or so (2020ish) unless the Jews get building fast!  Notice also the strong warning about false Messiahs.  The Antichrist will be the false Messiah par excellence!  But we can be sure when the real Messiah returns because he told us how he would come:

“And they said to them, Galilean men, why are you standing and staring into heaven?  This Yahshua who was taken up from you to heaven, likewise he will come just as you have seen him who ascended into heaven.”  Acts 1:11

“On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south.”  Zechariah 14:4

“For as the sunshine comes out from the East and is seen even in the West, thus will be the coming of the Son of man.”  Matthew 24:27 AENT

This rendering gives the correct idea.  Most translations say ‘lightning’ giving the impression that Jesus will appear as lightning.  But lightning disappears in a hurry.  Sunshine does not.  ‘Coming’ is also better translated ‘presence’.

“Wherever the carcass is, there will the eagles gather.”  Matthew 24:28

This hints at the huge destruction of this battle and the immense number of dead.  It is also referred to:

“And I saw a Messenger standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven: “Come you, assemble to this great supper of Elohim; that you may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains of thousands, and the flesh of valiant men, and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all the free-born and of slaves, and of the small and the great.”  Revelation 19:17-18  AENT

“And immediately after the suffering of those days, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not shine its light.  And the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken.  And then will be seen the sign of the Son of man in heaven, and the powers of all the tribes of the land will mourn, when they will see the Son of man who comes upon the clouds of heaven with great power and glory.  And he will send his Messengers with a large trumpet, and they will gather his chosen ones from the four winds from one end of heaven to the other.”  Matthew 24:29-31

Thus there will be great signs in the sun and moon and clouds.  With this manifestation be like that in Moses’ day?

“The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.”  Exodus 13:21  NASB

“Now from the fig tree learn a parable.  As soon as its branches become tender and bring forth its leaves, you know that summer has arrived.  Thus also when you have seen all these things, know that it has arrived at the door.  Truly I say to you, that this tribe will not pass until all these things happen.”  Matthew 24:32-34  AENT

Who is the fig tree?  Israel!  Notice it says this tribe will not pass until  all these things happen?  That means Israel will not fail even though all these horrible destructions and battles rage.  Notice this version doesn’t say ‘generation’?  Tribe gives the idea of people-group.  Generation gives the idea of time.  It’s about God’s people!

“Heaven and earth may pass, but my word will not pass.  About the day and about the hour no man knows, not even the Messengers of heaven, but the Father alone.  And as in the days of Noah, thus will be the coming of the Son of man.  For as they were before the deluge, eating and drinking and taking women and giving them in marriage to men up to the day that Noah entered into the ark, and they did not know until the deluge came and took them all, thus will be the coming of the Son of man.  Then two men will be in the field, one will be taken and one will be left.  And two women will be grinding at the mill.  One will be taken and one will be left.  Therefore be alert, because you do not know in what hour your Master will come.  And know this, that if the master of the house had known, he would not have allowed his house to be plundered.  Because of this also, you should be prepared, because in an hour that you do not expect, the Son of man will come.  Then who is the faithful and wise servant whom his master has appointed over his household to give them food in due time.  That servant is blessed when his master comes and finds him doing thus.  I say truly to you, that he will appoint him over all that he owns.  But if a servant being evil in his heart says that “My master will be delayed in coming.” and  begins to beat his fellow-servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.  The master of that servant will come in a day that he does not expect, and in an hour that he does not know.  And he will cut him in two and give him his lot among the hypocrites, and there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”  Matthew 24:35-51  AENT

Notice that ‘the faithful and wise servant’ is contrasted with ‘a servant being evil’.   Is it one person, or a category of persons?  We think the later.  Jehovah’s witnesses say the faithful slave is their 9 man ruling body.  Bible Students say the faithful slave was Brother Russell and the evil slave was Judge Rutherford.  But these verses cover a much broader sweep of history than that.  Has Jesus returned?  Even if he has come secretly as the thief, have all these things come to pass in the above verses?  No.  The clear import of the faithful servant or slave is anyone who is doing God’s work.  A person doing God’s work will give other believers food in due season.  Granted, certain people did this in spades as did Charles Russell.  But his knowledge was necessarily incomplete as a long time still remains before Jesus splits the Mount of Olives in two.  Let us not make the mistake of relying on one person or group as the source for knowledge.  Did not the Catholics make this same mistake saying that the pope is the vicar of Christ?   Let’s carry on a little further:

“Then let the Kingdom of Heaven be likened to those ten virgins who took their lamps and went out for the meeting of the bride and the bridegroom.  Now five of them were wise and five were foolish.  And those foolish virgins took their lamps but did not take oil with them.  But those wise virgins took oil in vessels with their lamps.  Now when the bridegroom delayed, they slumbered and slept.  And in the middle of the night there was an outcry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom comes!  Go out for his meeting!  Then all those virgins arose and prepared their lamps.  And those foolish virgins were saying to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for behold our lamps have gone out.’  These wise virgins answered and said, ‘What if these is not enough for us and for you?  Rather, go to those who sell and buy for yourselves.  And while they went to buy the bridegroom came, and those who were ready entered with him into the banquet-hall.  And the door was locked.  Now later also came those other virgins, and were saying, ‘Our master!  Our master!  Open the door for us.’  Then he answered and said to them, ‘Truly I say to you that, “I do not know you!”  Be alert, therefore, for you do not know that day or hour.”  Matthew 25:1-13  AENT

Are the five wise virgins the faithful slave?  Or is it just another illustration?  These five probably represent the bride of Christ, and the five foolish virgins represent the household of faith who do not make their election sure and end up as anti-typical Levites.

The Shepherd & The Sheep

Shepherds in Jesus’ day had to be on guard for wolves and lions.  They had to lead sheep by gently calling them.  It is possible that Jesus tended sheep.  We have no way of knowing, but he used shepherding metaphors a lot.  He also used masonry metaphors.

“But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.  All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left.”  Matthew 25:31-33

“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.”  John 10:11

The good shepherd would give his life defending the sheep.

” Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”  1 Peter 5:8

Here, Satan is pictured as a lion, sneaking in to devour the sheep.  But Jesus will give his very life to defend his sheep.

Sometime Sins

There are some things that are always sins:  murder, theft, lies.  Then there are other things that are sometimes sins:  drinking alchohol, dancing, gambling, masturbation.  Unfortunately, there are some Christians who view all four as always sins.  But how do they deal with:

“On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.  When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”  “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”  His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”  Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.  Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”  They did so and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.”  John 2:1-9

“David danced before the Lord with all his might; David was girded with a linen ephod.”  2 Samuel 6:14

Most people in the developed world gamble with their savings in the stock market or bond market or money market.  Regarding masturbation, some point to this story to claim it is forbidden:

“Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform your duty as a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.” Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother’s wife, he wasted his seed on the ground in order not to give offspring to his brother.  But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the Lord; so He took his life also.”  Genesis 38:8-10

Onan’s sin was refusing to build up his brother’s lineage as his kinsman redeemer.  If one takes the view that masturbation is always sin, it blocks most wives from orgasm, making them not interested in sex, which is a danger for a marriage.  Satan is well pleased with this view.  As someone has said, “Satan hates sex in marriage as much as he loves sex outside of marriage.”

Jesus’ two geneologies

If you compare the genealogies of Matthew and Luke, some interesting questions arise.  How is it that Shealtiel could be the son of Jeconiah and also the son of Neri?  It seems that most agree that Matthew’s list is Joseph’s side and Luke’s list is Mary’s.  It follows that Shealtiel must be the biological son of Neri in order for Jesus to be a blood decendant of David.  The Jews had more meanings for son than we do, including son-in-laws or general descendants.  It’s possible that Jeconiah was Shealtiel’s uncle.

It’s notable that king David shows up in both lines as does Zerubbabel.  Messianic prophecies have a lot of Davidic overtones.  “In that day

“I will restore David’s fallen shelter—
    I will repair its broken walls
    and restore its ruins—
    and will rebuild it as it used to be.”  Amos 9:11

“Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.”  Isaiah 9:7

“In love a throne will be established; in faithfulness a man will sit on it— one from the house of David— one who in judging seeks justice and speeds the cause of righteousness.”  Isaiah 16:5

“I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.”  Isaiah 22:22

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.”  Jeremiah 23:5

“Instead, they will serve the Lord their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.”  Jeremiah 30:9

““‘In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land.”  Jeremiah 33:15

“I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.”  Jeremiah 33:22

“I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd.”  Ezekiel 34:23

“I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the Lord have spoken.”  Ezekiel 34:24

“My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.”  Ezekiel 37:24

“They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived. They and their children and their children’s children will live there forever, and David my servant will be their prince forever.”  Ezekiel 37:25

“Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.”  Hosea 3:5

“On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity,”  Zechariah 13:1

Wow!  If that’s not enough prophecies!  But also note what’s said about Zerubbabel:

“I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.

 “‘On that day,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”  Haggai 2:22-23

“Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke me up, like someone awakened from sleep.  He asked me, “What do you see?”  I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven channels to the lamps.  Also there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”  I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”  He answered, “Do you not know what these are?”  “No, my lord,” I replied.  So he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.  “What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of ‘God bless it! God bless it!’”  Then the word of the Lord came to me: “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.  “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?”  Then I asked the angel, “What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand?”  Again I asked him, “What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil?”  He replied, “Do you not know what these are?”  “No, my lord,” I said.  So he said, “These are the two who are anointed to serve the Lord of all the earth.”  Zechariah 4:1-14

Zerubbabel will be intimately involved with the revealing of the Messiah and his temple as well.

Death of the Innocents

There are two prominent stories of killing innocent infants in the bible.

“Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”  Exodus 1:22

This happened just a few years before the Exodus out of Egypt.  Sometime around 1620 BC give or take.

“When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.”  Matthew 2:16

This happened around 1 or 2 BC.  Both incidents are significant in that they happened just prior to the founding of the Israelite nation and the founding of the church.  At some point future, Israelites and Gentile believers will be united to one faithful house of God.

Economic Forecasting & Phrophecy

Economic forecasting and prophecy are often more complicated than most think.  It is amazing to see plausible, well thought out economic forecasts based on one main factor like interest rates or capacity utilization.  Problem is, there are many other factors at play that often make such simplistic forecasts useless.  The bible is similar.  It might be nice if all we have to do is believe on Jesus and we have instant Paradise.  The Jews fell into this trap 2,000 years ago, and most Christians fall into it today.  It is very enlightening to read why many Jews say Jesus was not the Messiah.  He didn’t fulfill all the prophecies.  Similarly, Christians today don’t appreciate that Jesus will not fulfill all the rest of the prophecies in one day.  It will probably take well over 1,000 years.  Everything will be fulfilled in its time.

Sarah & Elizabeth

Two very important women who had similar experiences are Sarah & Elizabeth.  Both had their first child after it should have been possible.  It’s likely that Sarah had Isaac after menopause.  It’s possible Elizabeth did too.  Sarah gave birth to Isaac when she was ninety.  Isaac was the child God promised her 25 years earlier.  Elizabeth was barren and along in years when God promised her a son through a vision to her husband Zechariah.  John was the designated Nazarite who paved the way for Jesus’ ministry.   Is this a grand parallel between the Israelites and the church?

The Hebrew Resurrection

There is evidence that the resurrection will happen during the Millennium.  But there also are hints that the resurrection will start before Armageddon.  This blog assumes that there are two Millenniums – the Sabbath and the Jubilee.  The church is the first to be resurrected.  But are only the Hebrews resurrected before Armageddon?  The question is how to we interpret this scripture:

“And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”  Isaiah 40:5

It appears to be saying that everyone will see the glory of the Lord at the same time.   Are these only people living at that time?  This author previously has thought that all people would be resurrected before Amrageddon.  But could this be more referring to the end of the Millennium?

Fast Birth

“Before she was in labor
she gave birth;
before her pain came upon her
she was delivered of a son.
Who has heard such a thing?
Who has seen such things?
Shall a land be born in one day?
Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment?
For as soon as Zion was in labor
she brought forth her sons.
Shall I bring to the birth and not cause to bring forth?
says the Lord;
shall I, who cause to bring forth, shut the womb?
says your God.
“Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
all you who mourn over her;
that you may suck and be satisfied
with her consoling breasts;
that you may drink deeply with delight
from the abundance of her glory.”
For thus says the Lord:
“Behold, I will extend prosperity to her like a river,
and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and you shall suck, you shall be carried upon her hip,
and dandled upon her knees.
As one whom his mother comforts,
so I will comfort you;
you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.”  Isaiah 66:7-13

What is this referring to?  It seems to be referring to the rebirth of Israel.  Could it also refer to human birth?  Either way, birth without birth pains would be nice!  Is this the reversing of the curse?  “To the woman he said,
“I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing;
in pain you shall bring forth children,”  Genesis 3:16

Indeed, all of the curse must eventually be reversed, ultimately even death itself.  This prophecy may refer to the battle of Armageddon on the Day of Atonement when Jesus stands on the amount of Olives, or something else.
